Sustainability

We know we have an important role to play in helping to combat and mitigate the effects of climate change. We are committed to making environmentally responsible choices in our business practices and, just as we continue to learn and grow in other areas of our company, we strive for continual improvement in our sustainability efforts.

We strive to reduce energy consumption at our distribution centers and offices. HMH’s headquarters in Boston has received the LEED^® Gold Certification for Existing Buildings™, which is the second highest LEED certification level attainable.

We aim to transport our products to districts and schools in an environmentally conscious way. In 2024, HMH saved 1,824,362 pounds of CO₂ by managing our carbon footprint with intentional transportation methods. HMH’s transportation partners also participate in the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program, which helps measure and improve freight transportation efficiency. In 2024, over 30% of our transportation miles to distribute our products were with SmartWay carriers.

Whenever possible, we recycle the excess product and waste generated at our distribution centers and warehouses in an effort to avoid sending recyclable products and other waste to landfills.
